FGCU Small Business Development Center Celebrates 50 Years of Service to SWFL
Celebrating 50 years of impact, the FGCU Small Business Development Center marks a significant milestone in empowering Southwest Florida’s entrepreneurial community. As part of the statewide SBDC network—founded in 1976 to connect higher education with small business support—the center has played a vital role in providing no-cost consulting, training, and resources to help businesses start, grow, and thrive. Florida Gulf Coast University has served as a key regional partner in this mission, reinforcing its commitment to economic development and innovation across the region. Over five decades, the FGCU SBDC has helped fuel local job creation, strengthen small businesses, and drive sustainable economic growth.
Distinguished Entrepreneur Awards
On May 6, the SBDC at FGCU is set to host its 14th annual Distinguished Entrepreneur Awards at the university’s Cohen Center Ballroom. The event highlights the contributions of local business leaders, including legacy companies and startups, during the SBA’s National Small Business Week. It is likely that the event will sell out the 240-person capacity ballroom, said SBDC marketing coordinator and awards event lead Anthony Myles. Organizers are planning for the special 50th anniversary occasion with elevated decor, food and music that offer an elegant feel with a “business casual” dress code.
